Parenting & Family Work

Coming into Residential Treatment can be especially difficult for parents, and their children. We aim to offer support and to tailor our services to accommodate family needs wherever possible. Staff have regular child protection training and draw on a wide range of qualifications and experience to support parents through their treatment journey.

Assessment

It is important for the assessment team to have information about children, their needs, and any care plans in place, in order to ensure the most effective treatment planning and communications from the outset. It is also helpful to know if there are any specific family issues to be addressed during treatment as this work may be built into the treatment plan.

Detox and Primary Services

If requested, counselling staff can offer help and guidance with family issues – ‘family sessions’ are often arranged to coincide with pre-arranged visits.

Secondary and Day Services

In addition to the in-house Parenting course run at Longreach (which also has facilities for overnight stays by children under the age of 18) a Positive Parenting group is available to men and women using secondary and day services. This group looks at commonly occurring issues and encourages mutual support while keeping children’s needs the central focus. Established links with local organisations and Children’s Centres ensure a wide range of additional support and provide opportunities for community involvement.
