Supporting you in Rebuilding your Life
Exciting partnership with Plymouth University
After carrying out 8 years worth of research and off the back of experiments Professor Jacqui Andrade from Plymouth university and Professor David Kavanagh from Queensland University in Brisbane, have developed Functional Imagery Training.
Professor Andrade initially wanted to understand the process of underpinning human motivation, particularly in situations with completing goals. For example- Wanting a cigarette to satisfy a craving now, but wanting to quit and be healthier in the future. Elaborated Intrusion Therapy (EIT) gives a key role to intrusive thoughts and embodied mental images in conscious desires. The international interdisciplinary team has developed a new intervention based in EIT, for supporting motivation for behaviour change; Functional Imagery Training (FIT).
Functional Imagery Training is basically a therapeutic intervention to build motivation and help individuals achieve their goals. Although it uses the spirit of Motivational Interviewing, FIT works on multi-sensory imagery to explore these changes rather than by verbal means.
Functional Imagery Training is currently undergoing randomised controlled trials in Australia and Plymouth. Which is where Broadreach comes in, a couple of our counsellors have jumped on board to test out the use of this therapeutic therapy, in conjunction with clients who are trying to withdraw from substances. The goal is that any client who thinks about using Alcohol or Drugs can use the app to motivate them and promote a healthier option such as exercising instead of using.
Recently developed is a free easy to use FIT app called `Goal in Mind' where the client can work on their goals through the use of imagery. It allows the client to store photos that represent their goals and related behaviours and listen to a guided imagery session. The app encourages clients to practice their imagery and boost their confidence. A client learns how imagery can serve them as a self-motivating tool and the app helps them get sorted without constant practitioner input. Goals include looking at being eating healthier, exercising more and cutting back on cigarettes etc.
