Jacqui T - How I value the Day Service
After completing treatment at Longreach, I found myself being 6 months clean, feeling raw and occasionally serene! This sense of achievement was a lovely feeling and I felt genuine happiness for the first time since giving birth to my gorgeous son, Joe. However, the feelings of fear, loneliness and doubt could not be denied.
The Aftercare Day Service quickly became a central place for me to spend my time - in fact I attended the service daily. This shows just how much I valued and needed the security and structure that I found here, especially after having all this in place for me at Longreach.
The day care service was (and still is) a pivotal part of my recovery. I am able to get involved in practical workshops and explore alternative therapy groups. I was given the opportunity to discover some of the Devon and Cornwall countryside and most importantly, I am given the opportunity for self-exploration with the support of the staff and other friends in recovery that also attend.
Three months on and I have achieved other important personal goals in my life, I study at the university and I have a job in a nursing home, all of which I truly love doing, and all of which would have been impossible without the support and encouragement that I receive and the many transferable skills that I have learnt from attending the programme.
Sometimes I lose sight of my life, everything seems to become hazy and I find myself walking around dazed and confused, but with the safety of the day service that is always here for me, I am learning to manage these insecure feelings and to let go of my fears.
Katie
‘Broadreach Action for Change’ has played a key role in helping me to accept my addiction and imperfections enabling me to move forward into everyday living coping with the stresses of life. I feel very passionately about the support I have received which is ongoing from both my peers and the counsellors. Aftercare for me is a very safe place and I have yet to experience any real negativity. As well as the tremendous amount of support and encouragement received here I also make use of the resources available spending many hours playing around on the Internet, carrying out any important phone calls. There is always someone here willing to listen and offer support, for me its becoming a place where I can support rather than be supported although I can recognise my vulnerability and wont give to much, it’s about offering to others what I have been offered. It’s a good place with good people.

I would say Broadreach saved my life. It definitely got me on the road to recovery. I came in here physically unwell and mentally unstable. What Broadreach did was rehabilitate me to a point where I was feeling a great deal more stable. I was able to look at my addiction, look at the roots of the problem and issues which had affected me during my addiction and my life. It built the foundation for my ongoing recovery. I wouldn’t like to think where I would be today if it hadn’t been for Broadreach House – probably six foot under.

Broadreach is an excellent place and has helped a lot of people. It certainly saved my life, while I was using, my life was dismal, I did not have a life.”
After 20 years as an alcoholic, 54 year old Lionel said Broadreach helped ‘me stay alive.’ He added “I would probably be back on the streets or even dead if it were not for Broadreach.
Sam
Sam’s abuse of heroin began when she was just 14. Her addiction later deteriorated to both heroin and crack cocaine. Ten years on and Sam is now a regular at the centre’s aftercare programme which provides support sessions for former clients as they rebuild their lives out in the community.
“Broadreach aftercare helped me from the moment I came out of treatment and gave me the confidence to re-integrate back into the community. Without Broadreach I would be dead through using, or in prison.”
Simon
Simon abused heroin and cocaine for ten years and has been drug-free for nine months. The 31 year old formerly of Plymouth, still receives aftercare treatment from Broadreach. “It gives me somewhere I can come in on a weekly basis if I’m having a bad time of it. Here I can share experiences with other people I know I can trust”
Sharon believes her children would have been taken from her had she not been given help quitting alcohol. “I could quite possibly be in the gutter had it not been for Broadreach. I used to be violent but I have come to terms with everything, it has made me face reality and has turned my life around.”
Katie says she owes her life to Broadreach. After being dependent on alcohol and prescribed tranquilisers for eight years, Broadreach gave her a ‘reality check.’ “It also saved my relationship with my family and loved ones.”
Over a period of 30 years, Robert abused alcohol, crack cocaine, heroin, in fact “anything I could get my hands on.” But clean for nine months, he’s now feeling “on top of the world.” He is currently living at Closereach – the second stage treatment centre for men. “My life was horrendous,” said the 55 year old. “Broadreach has given me my life back. If I was not here I think I would be inclined to relapse.”
Brian
Brian used to drink three bottles of whisky a day as a chronic alcoholic. Drink free for nine months now, he attends the Aftercare programme to help him continue his recovery. “What it has offered me at 49 is it has enabled me to start to live life. Broadreach has given me self-respect, dignity and self-value as a human being again.”
