Understanding
Substance misuse I Types of Dependence I Identifying
Problematic use
The use of drugs, alcohol and other substances that alter the way we feel and see things is one of the oldest activities of the human race. When a person's use of these substances gets out of control, even the serious consequences of their substance abuse will not always make them want to stop using their drug of choice. If and when they do decide to give up, they may find that it is more difficult than they thought.
There is a multitude of different theories to describe drug, alcohol and other substances dependence and addiction problems. Not every expert in the field will agree on any one definition - but all will accept the need to reduce the confusion and anxiety that everyone feels when faced with a
drug or alcohol problem. At Broadreach House, we take a holistic approach to treatment, looking at each client's
issues from every angle in order to tackle the causes of the problem, not just the symptoms. It is only by addressing the bigger picture, and treating the client not in isolation, but in the context of his or her environment, that long-term success becomes attainable.
