SOCA donation

The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) has donated the £5,000proceeds from the sale of an oil painting to Ocean Quay. During a SOCA investigation into cocaine dealing in the Plymouth area the Robert Lenkiewicz self-portrait painting was seized. It is believed that it was stolen and connected to a drugs deal.
Nine people were subsequently convicted of drug trafficking offences and, following the trial in August 2007, the original owner could not be identified and the painting was sold at public auction for £5,000 under the Police Property Act.
Bill Hughes QPM, Director General of SOCA, said: "SOCA is delighted that these funds, seized from a local criminal, will be used to rehabilitate local drug offenders. This is a prime example of law enforcement being able to put the proceeds of crime back into the very same community where the damage was done."
Deputy Chief Constable, Tony Melville, responded: "It was great to hear colleagues in the Serious and Organised Crime Agency have donated money gained from the seizure of criminals assets back into such a worthwhile initiative as the Ocean Quay Project.
Chrissy Richman, of Broadreach House, said: "The Ocean Quay Project helps people live a life away from crime, and we do this by helping them find a way of contributing to society. This £5,000 from SOCA will help one or two rehabilitated offenders with good business ideas on their way to making a living legally."
