About the Course

» Combines participation in skills practice sessions with group discussion and tutor-led discussion covering all main areas of further counselling skills

» A particular emphasis is given to competent ethical practice in a helping role, led by self-awareness, accountability and a solid foundation of respect for the client/helpee

» The theoretical basis for this course is Person-Centred/Humanistic Counselling and a recommended reading list will be provided

» The tutoring for this course is provided by highly qualified professionals working in the field of counselling with a thorough grounding in adult education teaching

» All students will be provided with a comprehensive support structure, including a personal tutor, as well as tutorials, and pastoral support if required within the centre

Course Content

The course includes 7 Learning Outcomes covering all main areas relevant to the study of initial counselling skills and uses CPCAB’s 7 parallel processes.

» Communicating empathic understanding

» Working to the helpee’s agenda

» Developing self-awareness

» Using listening and responding skills

» Giving and receiving feedback to develop counselling skills

Assessment of the course is by Portfolio and an externally assessed written paper after watching a CPCAB DVD under exam conditions.

Who Can Apply

» Anyone who has completed the Introduction to Counselling Skills course and is interested in learning further counselling skills to help others – either in a voluntary or employed situation

» Previous completion of the Introduction to Counselling Skills course is recommended. No prior experience of counselling is required

» All applicants must be 18 years or above

» This course incorporates experiential elements that will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal development activities, it is not recommended for those currently experiencing emotional difficulty or suffering from present substance misuse issues

Course Summary

» The course lasts for 30 weeks, 3 hours each week

» 90 guided learning hours will take place at Ocean Quay

» This is a Level 2 course and provides candidates with 17 credits

» Progression is available to the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies

» No personal therapy or placement practice is required to complete this course

» £400 course fees, concessions may be available for both employed and unemployed individuals. Please contact us for more information.

» 80% minimum attendance required

» Course accredited by the CPCAB
