At Broadreach House, we recognise that there is a need for specific support for parents with drug and alcohol problems. Our programme is designed to address the challenges faced by people trying to rebuild relationships with their children, and offers support throughout our services.
There are many specific difficulties faced by parents that would not be suitable for addressing in a group situation. For these, we offer focused individual work. This may be around dealing with social services, schools, carers etc. It may take the form of advice and information, advocacy, letter writing or contacting organisations or individuals on behalf of parents. It may also be in attending meetings with parents such as case conferences or supervised visits with their children. All parents are supported and encouraged to advocate on their own behalf.
Time4Change
Supporting relationships affected by addiction
Introduction
Family Matters is a small Plymouth-based charity dedicated to working with individuals and families who want safe and professional support for their relationship difficulties.
In partnership with the Broadreach organisation, a new service started in July 2006 called Time4Change to address the specific needs of all family members who have been affected by a major drink or drug problem – that is service users as well as their friends and family. Evidence shows that this work can increase the chance of a successful recovery.
What we do
The service will be organised to offer support to both service users and also separately for friends/family members. The two approaches will often run totally independently and this is quite deliberate so that we can respond to whoever is asking for help and support at a given time. It does not make sense to expect everyone to be ready at the same time as the consequences of addiction will affect everyone in different ways. If a meetings between service users and their friends/families would be helpful, then this can be done but is not compulsory.
When we do it
The service at present ONLY runs on a Thursday at Ocean Quay so is a tiny resource. We are putting in bids to fund an expansion but until this happens we will have to restrict access carefully.
How to get in touch
Friends and Family can ring us direct on 01752 566219 while Service Users from the Quay Project or Trevi or Longreach can arrange a referral through their counsellor. We will arrange a convenient time for a first meeting. Appointments last one hour and the first session gives everyone a chance to see what it involves and decide whether they want to go any further. Appointments can be arranged individually or a few service users who wish to explore common areas of concern can come together. Our qualified therapists work as a team of 2 or 3 and the number of sessions is negotiable.
Over the years drug and alcohol services have tended to focus attention on the individual with a problem leaving out friends/ family who have often felt blamed and excluded. We want to change this because we believe that friends/family play a key role in recovery and so we are dedicating special time to this group. Please feel free to put anyone in touch with us who you think might benefit.
