About the Course

  • Combines participation in skills practice sessions with lecture material, and group discussion covering all main areas of brief intervention skills
  • A particular emphasis is given to working with service user motivation to make achievable changes
  • The focus is upon using students existing skills base to work with people experiencing drug & alcohol problems in order to identify issues and prioritise goals for change
  • The tutoring for this course is provided by highly qualified professionals working in the field of substance misuse with a thorough grounding in adult education teaching
  • All students will be provided with a comprehensive support structure, including personal tutors, as well as pastoral support if required within the centre

Course Content

The course includes 5 Learning Outcomes covering all main areas relevant to the study of brief intervention skills:

  • Supporting individuals who have used substances
  • Identify people appropriate for brief interventions
  • Understand how to offer harm reduction advice & guidance
  • Understand the principles of motivational engagement
  • Support individuals to reduce substance use

Assessment

Assessment of the course is through an in-class case study, reflective log and a question & answer worksheet, there is also in-class role play to evidence practical learning. There is no exam for this course.

Who Can Apply

  • Anyone interested in using brief intervention skills to help people with drug and alcohol problems – either in a voluntary or employed situation
  • Anyone wanting to find out more about harm reduction and motivational engagement
  • No previous training or experience required
  • All applicants must be 18 years or above
  • This course incorporates academic and experiential assignment elements and people wishing to be accredited must be willing to complete 2 written assignments to Level 3 standard and participate in in-class role-play and discussion

Course Summary

  • This is a 3 day course 9:30-4:00 (although can be adapted to 1 or 2 days as a bespoke course for organisations).
  • The taught days will take place at Ocean Quay
  • Lunch & refreshments will be provided
  • This is a Level 3 course and provides candidates with 3 credits
  • No placement practice is required to complete this course
  • £120 course fees, £150 if accreditation is desired – no concessions are available for this course
