Broadreach House has been successful in reaching the final of the ‘Social Justice Awards’. The awards ceremony will take place on the 30st of October as part of the 2nd annual Social Justice Conference, and will be attended by several hundred charities and organisations who work with disadvantaged individuals and families across the UK.
Nomination for the award was made by Lucy Stapleton who is currently employed as the Compliance Manager for Job Centre Plus. Lucy has worked closely with members of staff at Ocean Quay for a period of several years and is a strong advocate of the work that is carried out at the centre on a daily basis. Lucy says: “Ocean Quay provides the structure for service users to develop the self-confidence and belief in their own skills and abilities that they need to make the positive life changes that are necessary to reach their full potential. The Volunteering to Work project supports people to build confidence so they can start volunteering. The project leads to the routes into work being developed and is supportive of Jobcentre Plus’s aim to support people in recovery from substance misuse, back into work in a constructive way. Ocean Quay also offers a programme of Mentor Supported Education and Training, which provides support to service users for as long as is required”.
Russell King, the Ocean Quay Manager will be travelling up to London for the awards ceremony. Russell says: “It is very exciting to be nominated for this award and for the work that we undertake to be recognised in this way. Our service users and stakeholders have contributed much to the development of the programmes that we run and we appreciate the opportunity to have this publicly acknowledged”.
Ocean Quay works in close co-operation with other agencies in the Plymouth area including: Probation, Housing and Adult and Children’s services. A range of training courses are also on offer and provide service user’s with the opportunity to gain accredited awards in a variety of areas including Personal Development, ICT, Managing Finances, Volunteering, Mentoring and Cookery.
