For a many years there has been an absence of accredited training in groupwork and group therapy skills in the substance misuse profession with interested learners often having to travel the length of the UK to secure training to suit their needs. Now Broadreach House are delivering a 3 day accredited course that provides learners with the skills and understanding necessary to facilitate groupwork in a variety of settings (not just substance misuse).

This is an excellent opportunity to gain a rare qualification that is recognised nationwide and enables practitioners to improve their groupwork practice and allows individuals new to the field of work to discover a fascinating area of therapeutic practice.

Our first course runs on the 16th, 17th and 18th of July.

Please contact Ruth Sheldon or Emily Roberts for more details and to apply.

Friday March 15th saw the launch of an initiative to share knowledge and experiences of working with survivors of psychological trauma. ‘Trauma, Approaches to Healing’, was a one-day event hosted by Broadreach House with the aim of promoting trauma informed services. Contributors shared their expertise through presentations and workshops that were summed up by one enthusiastic attendee as “Very interesting, informative – inspiring in different ways.”
The event was supported by volunteers from Broadreach House and Devon & Cornwall Refugee Support. The team worked enthusiastically to prepare the building and were ready to greet people on the day with music written and recorded by service users. With the support of our cook, they prepared and served an excellent and much praised lunch and, at the end of the day, were around to help with the clearing up!
The contributions from the speakers were well informed and diverse, with presentations based on Broadreach House’s own data analysis and research on dual diagnosis setting the stage for other approaches and perspectives.
Dr Alison Battersby, a consultant psychiatrist specialising in addictions, gave a refreshingly clear talk on ‘The role of Psychiatry in Trauma’, extolling the benefits of a recovery focus in the field of both mental health and addictions. Her ‘no-labels attitude and positivity’ was much appreciated and attracted some enthusiastic responses.
The team from SALT South West, a long-established charity working with childhood sexual abuse, shared their collective knowledge and experience in an afternoon training session, while Joanne Higson, from Devon & Cornwall Refugee Support, facilitated a very informative and eye-opening workshop that was described as ‘ insightful, worthwhile and well delivered.”.
Richard Hall of Sailaday, a charity that uses sailing as an adventure therapy, took people to the edge of their comfort zone with an experiential session that gave an understanding of how specific activities can promote internal change.
The day concluded with an open debate on the concept of Post Traumatic Growth – this lively and interesting discussion had to be brought to a close to allow people to leave on time – but not before they had had the opportunity to make suggestions for future events, and leave some excellent feedback (examples below).
“Really enjoyed the day – good speakers – very relevant and ‘rooted in practice’ this is so important.”
“Structure and content both very good. Great planning and excellent facilitation throughout.”

The Ron Brooks Tournament is an annual football tournament held in memory of Ron, who was a much-loved drug and alcohol counsellor and Broadreach House staff member. Ron sadly passed away 5 years ago. Ron was also a Chelsea fanatic and a true gentleman.

"Ron Brooks"

Ron was passionate about supporting vulnerable people who were in recovery from addiction.
His wife Angie said that “I can’t think of a more fitting way to remember him, than a tournament that brings together vulnerable young men and women to take part in his favourite sport”.
Agencies from across the city enter teams comprised of clients and the tournament is played in a ‘festival’ atmosphere where fun and fair play seems to be more important than who picks up the trophy.
The event is hosted, arranged and driven by friends and ex clients of drug and alcohol services in Plymouth.
Danny, Erin and Mick lead the event and put in a huge amount of work to ensure that this event goes ahead each year and it is people like them who knew Ron as a warm, caring man with time for everybody, who are motivated to pay tribute to him in this way.
This year the tournament was won by the JLS tribute team who remained unbeaten throughout the tournament.
Angie Brooks said “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the agencies that supported us, the referees, the teams that took part and the local businesses that helped to fund the day. We made enough money on the day to ensure that the tournament will go ahead next year and that’s what it’s all about.
There is often negative press regarding young vulnerable people in the city, this event is an opportunity to celebrate their progress towards living productive and happier lives.
My Ron would have loved that.”

A Plymouth drug and alcohol charity, in partnership with a local forum of service users, is holding the first ever South West Recovery Walk on Saturday 18th August. Broadreach House and Plymouth Service Users’ Representative Forum (SURF) have planned the event, aimed to romote and celebrate the principles and spirit of recovery from addiction. Gina Dormer, Broadreach House’s Chief Executive, says: “The purpose of the walk is to celebrate the achievements of people who have overcome addiction, and to show that recovery is possible.” She added “Drug and alcohol addiction are things that touch the lives of people every day; we hope that by joining together and celebrating publicly that we will diminish some of the stigmas and misconceptions around addiction and recovery, and give hope to those individuals who are still battling with substance misuse. We will also be remembering those individuals who have been lost through their individual struggles with addiction.”

Tracy Parker, SURF Co-ordinator, says: “The event is open to everyone, and we at SURF hope that individuals from all walks of life will want to be involved. Addiction can affect everyone and this is a time for individuals and their family, friends and supporters, to walk together and celebrate being in recovery. This is a unique opportunity to bring recovery onto our streets; we are the faces of your shop assistants, school teachers, doctors and nurses and we want the event to show the joy of lives reclaimed and to celebrate the healing within individuals, families and communities.”

The Recovery Walk is also being supported by Plymouth’s Drug and Alcohol Action Team and agencies supporting the day include Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and the Department of Health’s National Treatment Agency.

The assembly point for the Recovery Walk will be at Smeaton’s Tower on Plymouth Hoe from 10.30am onwards, with the walk commencing at 11am. Walkers are asked to wear white t-shirts if possible and pens will be supplied on the day for individuals who want to write their own recovery messages. The 5 kilometre route will take in the sights of Plymouth City Centre, finishing at Broadreach House Ocean Quay on Richmond Walk. To support the event or for more details please contact Jude Wallace on 01752 566212 or email her at jude@broadreach-house.org.uk

Su Clark, who is a volunteer at the Quay Project, has started art and craft classes at the Quay. Sue is currently studying for a teaching qualification so she can offer clients the opportunity to gain accredited qualifications in arts and crafts.

Su has used her expertise and enthusiasm for creativity to develop her classes into well attended and vibrant sessions. Clients could be glass painting, learning different sketching and painting techniques or making bags, cushion covers and clothing. Su wants to start a fund raising drive so she can add a basic ceramic course to her extensive list of activities.

Although currently delivered at the Quay Project, Su hopes to be able to offer her classes to clients attending the Broadreach House residential treatment centres.

Su says; “Clients of Broadreach House projects are often involved in group therapy, education and voluntary work. As vital as these activities are, I feel it is important for clients to be able to take part in activities that allow them to relax, unwind and gain the confidence and satisfaction of completing a piece of work. The art and music classes at Ocean Quay can provide this.”

Su has been giving talks to women’s groups to raise awareness and funds for the art room.

For more information on the art classes please contact Su Clark or Steve Milford at Ocean Quay.
